The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Is a life in the Hollywood spotlight as glamorous as it may seem? Are the versions of our favorite stars in the press “real”? Or is there a different narrative behind closed doors?

Evelyn Hugo, a Hollywood star, decides to write a “tell-all” book at 79 years old about her career, life and, perhaps most interesting, her seven husbands. She surprises everyone when she recruits Monique, a no name journalist, to write her story. However, from the beginning, it becomes clear Evelyn Hugo has something up her sleeve for Monique, though both the reader and Monique are left in the dark.

Evelyn Hugo is everything one would expect – beautiful, glamorous, and ruthlessly addicted to success. Alongside Monique, I found myself admiring the movie star, despite the questionable things she did to hang on to her success. She was a strong, independent woman at a time when that wasn’t universally accepted. Yet, she made it work and almost always came out ahead.

I found myself unable to put this book down. I loved how the narrative followed Evelyn’s life chronologically, through her seven marriages. I also enjoyed the question the book left unanswered until the end – why Monique? I thought Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote an incredibly interesting book, and tied it together with multiple twists in the end.

I highly recommend you read this book next!
