The Storyteller’s Secret by Sejal Badani

Ever have a book slump? The past month or so I’ve read good, but not great books. I have been searching for one to get me out of this lull and found A Storyteller’s Secret, which instead gave me a book hangover!

This is the story of two women, a grandmother and granddaughter, who lived in different worlds and never had the opportunity to meet. Amisha lived in India, during the British occupation and fight for independence, whereas Jaya grew up in present day America. After facing the devastation of three miscarriages, Jaya ventures to India for the first time searching for her long lost family and some time to heal all against her mother’s wishes. Jaya meets Raj, her grandmother’s former servant, who tells Jaya for the first time the story of her grandmother.

Amisha reminded me a lot of my own grandmother – she is smart, savvy and born before her time in a world where she was not able to pursue all of the opportunities she would be able to today. I instantly felt a connection to Amisha, and also to Jaya who attempts to navigate the difficulties of young adulthood while being dealt a hand you never imagined possible.

Badani’s prose was lyrical and fluid and provided a window into their lives and emotions. I flew through the pages and was completely engaged. I highly recommend you pick this book up when you want a powerful, moving and emotional read.

Verdict: Read it
