How well do you know your best friend?
On paper, Zadie and Emma have storybook lives – best friends and successful doctors living in North Carolina. They have been through it all together – college, medical school, residency and now, motherhood.
However, their lives are turned upside down when a colleague from the past moves to town. The events, secrets and lies of their shared history resurface, and the best friends are forced to confront the skeletons they have tried to forget. How strong is their friendship? Can it truly withstand anything?
I really enjoyed that this book was told from both Zadie’s and Emma’s perspectives. Seeing the past and present through their eyes made it easy to see two sides of the story. I loved that this narrative was about successful career-focused women balancing family and work, showing that it can in fact be done. As someone who grew up surrounded by strong, smart females, and envisions eventually being a working parent, it was refreshing. I liked Zadie and Emma and wanted to hang out with them on their mommy’s nights out.
If you love Grey’s Anatomy or were a fan of ER, this book is most certainly for you! While at times the narrative seemed a bit like a soap opera, I found myself engaged in the drama of Zadie and Emma’s past as they navigated the long road to becoming successful doctors. While I can’t say I’d make the same choices in their shoes, I enjoyed their story.
Verdict: Read it (4/5 stars)
Length: 348 pages
When: If you’re in the mood for some Grey’s Anatomy-esque drama.
Favorite Quote: “If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s this: the past is never really gone. It’s one long chain linking the present and also the future, and sometimes it doubles back on itself, exposing the things you thought were buried.”
