Fitness Junkie: A Novel by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza

Fitness Junkie Book ReviewHow far have you gone to lose a few pounds? How far have you gone to save a friendship? We’ve all been there.

Janey, a wealthy socialite, abandons plans to take over her family’s business to partner with her best friend Beau, an aspiring fashion designer trained at FIT. Beau and Janey start B, a couture wedding dress company. Beau is fitness focused and obsessed with being “skinny”. As a result, Beau only designs dresses for B that are size 6 or below.   Being “skinny” had never been a problem for Janey – until a rough year with a lot of stress caused her to gain some weight.

Due to a contract signed one drunken night years ago, Beau gives Janey an ultimatum: lose 30 pounds or her job.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its satirical take on the fitness industry. Living in NYC, you cannot walk more than a block without seeing a woman in her name brand workout gear (admittedly, I am often that person). Janey should not be likeable with her trust fund baby, no budget life. However, Janey is completely relatable – down to earth, funny and self-deprecating – and I’m pretty sure she and I would be friends in real life. Instead of jealous, I found myself living vicariously through her and rooting for her to come out ahead.

This novel is outrageous and witty, spotlighting the things both women and men do to attain their idea of the perfect body or perfect weight, all while making you laugh and taking you through a journey of friendship, romance and drama.

Verdict: Read it!
Length: 304 pages
