Tiger Woods by Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian

In 1996, Sports Illustrated called Tiger Woods “The Chosen One”, but who chose him? God? Golf? The media? The public? The simplest answer to that question may be “All of the above”.

From an early age, Tiger was conditioned to be a golf phenom. The stories of his childhood, from infancy through college, really had me questioning the nature vs. nurture debate. I was fascinated how his father declared Tiger a golf god at 4 years old… and was right! Before Tiger could stand, he was being groomed to be a legendary golfer. However, this came a great cost, and Earl Woods often times crossed the line into psychological, if not physical, abuse.

As a golf fan, I loved being reminded of how truly dominant Woods was in his prime. His highs on the course will never be matched. Unfortunately, his lows off the course also may never be matched. Even before he crashed his Escalade into a tree that infamous night, Tiger conducted himself in deplorable ways and sabotaged relationships – professional, personal, and romantic.

This novel gives the reader insight beyond Tiger the golfer but still captures all of his allure on the links as well. While this is an obvious must read for any golf fan, it is also an incredible expose on arguably the most famous athlete of our generation.
